I’m another who was definitely forced to read it at school (1st yr/2nd yr at big school mebbe?) but can’t remember any of it tbh. I do remember having to tortuosly analyse passages from it as part of English classes and probably should give it another go.

Never read it but always felt like I should. I was a librarian for ten years and saw the book go out many, many times. I was in bookselling and publishing for another fifteen years and it was still popping up all over the place. Perhaps it’s time… 😏

I did read it at an impressionable age and it did make quite an impression. He writes beautifully.

I definitely WAS forced to read it by a teacher when my mind was elsewhere (but I don’t remember whether it was a warm June). Often thought about trying it again and I should probably get round to that.

I was astonished that I hadn’t. It’s one of those DNA of the nation books but nope.

It seems churlish to say I haven't read it but I have seen the TV adaptation.... but the TV adaptation starring Juliet Stevenson was pretty wonderful. I believe it featured Laurie Lee's voice narrating passages from the book.
